Looking for a spot to grab a drink or a bite without leaving your dog behind? From Toronto to Old Montréal, we’re rounding up some of Canada’s best dog-friendly patios along with tips for dining out safely with your pup in tow.

When the weather finally co-operates, there’s nothing better than grabbing a seat outside, ordering something cold, and spending a few hours doing absolutely nothing. And for many of us, that perfect summer afternoon includes a dog at our feet.

More restaurants across Canada are opening their patios to pets, making it easier to bring your dog along for brunch, happy hour, or a low-key dinner. Whether you live in a major city or you're passing through a smaller town, there's a growing list of spots that welcome dogs just as readily as they welcome customers.

From breweries in Vancouver to cobblestone cafés in Old Montréal, dog-friendly patios are becoming the norm, and they’re changing the way we dine out with our pets, making it easier, more relaxed, and way more fun to include them in our everyday plans.

The Rise of Dog-Friendly Dining

For pet parents, planning your day often includes figuring out what to do with your dog. Dog-friendly patios make that decision easier and they let you bring your dog into more of your daily life.

These patios aren’t just a convenience; they’re a reflection of how much our pets are part of our routines. Being able to meet a friend for lunch or grab a drink after work without leaving your dog behind means fewer trade-offs and more shared experiences. It’s a small shift that makes a big difference.

A good dog-friendly patio does more than just allow pets. It makes room for them with shaded spots, water bowls, and a general sense that your dog is a welcome guest, not just tolerated. And in return, dog parents are usually more than happy to keep their pups leashed, well-behaved, and out of the way.

Top Dog-Friendly Patios Across Canada

Not sure where to start your next patio crawl with your pup? These cities are leading the way when it comes to dog-friendly dining, and they’ve got the patios to prove it.

Toronto

Black Lab Brewing in Leslieville is basically a love letter to dogs. Named after the owners’ beloved black lab, the space is designed with dogs in mind, inside and out. The patio welcomes canines of all shapes and sizes, with staff often handing out water bowls and the occasional treat.

If you’re east-side, The Roy offers a cozy, pet-welcoming patio perfect for a laid-back brunch or evening pint. Expect water bowls and nods of approval from fellow dog lovers.

Old Montréal

Cobblestone streets, great food, and your dog at your side? Yes, please. Terrasse Nelligan offers rooftop views with a relaxed, dog-friendly atmosphere. Staff are used to canine guests and will usually bring over water without being asked.

Nearby, Marché des Éclusiers has a casual, community feel, and dogs are welcome on the outdoor terrace. It’s a great option for grabbing local bites and soaking up the Old Port scenery.

Vancouver

Local Public Eatery in Kitsilano has a great street-side patio that’s dog-friendly and just a short walk from the beach. Perfect for post-park drinks.

For a more low-key vibe, check out Brassneck Brewery on Main Street. Dogs are allowed on the patio, and it’s a popular weekend stop for both beer fans and their four-legged sidekicks.

Calgary

Vin Room has made a name for itself as one of Calgary’s most dog-friendly spots. Their Mission location not only welcomes dogs on the patio, they go a step further with treats and a dedicated dog menu.

You’ll also find a relaxed, pup-positive vibe at Cold Garden Beverage Company, a colourful brewery in Inglewood with a large outdoor space and plenty of dogs lounging around.

Victoria

Whistle Buoy Brewing Company is tucked away in Market Square and offers a welcoming, pet-friendly patio that feels like a hidden gem. The vibe is casual and community-focused, and dogs are more than welcome to hang out while you sample one of their small-batch beers.

If you're closer to downtown, Floyd’s Diner has a casual outdoor setup and a solid rep for being dog-friendly. The bright pink exterior and retro vibe make it just as fun to look at as it is to visit.

Ottawa

Over in Hintonburg, Beyond the Pale Brewing Company has a dog-welcoming patio and a community vibe that makes it easy to settle in for a while.

The Lieutenant’s Pump on Elgin Street also allows dogs on its street-level patio, ideal for grabbing lunch with your pup after a long walk along the Rideau Canal.

Keeping Patio Time Safe (and Stress-Free)

Before heading out, it’s worth brushing up on a few basics to make sure everyone is comfortable, including your dog, the staff, and other diners. Most dog-friendly patios expect dogs to be leashed at all times and kept under control, especially in busy or tight spaces. If your pup tends to get anxious around strangers or other dogs, a quieter patio might be the better option.

Bring a portable water bowl just in case, and try to prevent your dog from begging, barking excessively, or wandering under other people’s tables. Avoid feeding your dog from your plate, and keep an eye out for dropped food or drink spills that could pose a risk, like alcohol, chocolate, or onions. A bit of preparation can go a long way in making sure everyone enjoys their time outside.

Good Dogs, Good Patios, Good Times

Canada’s growing network of dog-friendly patios makes it easier than ever to include your dog in your everyday plans, from morning coffee runs to relaxed summer dinners. Whether you’re in a big city or exploring a smaller town, there’s likely a patio nearby that welcomes pets.

So next time the sun is shining and you’re deciding where to eat, grab the leash and bring your dog along. They’ll enjoy the sights, smells, and attention, and you’ll enjoy not having to leave them behind.
