Did you know you can find pet-friendly campgrounds in National Parks and Reserves, Provincial Parks, Regional Parks, and private parks across Canada? Whether you’re a seasoned backpacker or casual camper, if you’re planning to camp this season with your pooch, consider these tips to make sure you and your dog are set up for an ‘in-tents’ trip!

1. DO YOUR RESEARCH

Don’t hit the open road without knowing if your destination accepts pets! Doing a little research online first makes it easy enough to find pet-friendly campgrounds, parks, and trails. Rules and requirements are usually listed for pet owners about availability, additional fees, leash-laws, and permits. It also doesn’t hurt to call ahead first just to confirm.

2. PACK & PREP

Weather conditions and nature can be unpredictable, so it’s important to pack and prepare for the possibility of an emergency. Packing a pet-friendly first-aid kit is a must!  Cuts, scrapes, torn nails and allergic reactions can all occur at a campsite or exploring the great outdoors. Building your own kit or adding to an already made store-bought kit, is the best way to ensure everything is customized to your pet’s needs and lifestyle. It’s also very important to ensure your pets microchip and I.D. information is up-to-date, as well as having a list of local veterinary clinics in the area, should an emergency occur. 3. GEAR-UP

Create a camping checklist for your pooch!

  • Food and water dish
  • Food and/or treats
  • Medications
  • Reflective Leash / Collar / Harness
  • Bedding (inside the tent and out) or crate
  • Coat or sweater (depending on season)
  • Flea & tick preventive and/or pet-friendly bug repellant
  • Dog backpack & boots for hiking (optional)
  • A first-aid kit as described above

4. PAWLISH UP ON CAMPSITE PET ETIQUETTE

Before you head out on your adventure, it’s important to know if your dog is ready. Being respectful and courteous to your fellow campers is a must! Dogs should know basic commands as well as a good recall to keep your dog out of the other campers’ campsites. For safety reasons, it’s best to keep your pet near you at all times. Dogs should never be left unsupervised, but if they are tied out to lounge with you or the family, it’s important to keep them away from any hazards such as food, waste, BBQ’s or campfires. Most importantly, be sure to pick up and dispose of any dog waste promptly and properly.

5. HAVE FUN

Camping is a great way to relax, get-away and have a bonding experience with your pup. Snuggle up, smell the campfire, and enjoy the scenery. With these simple tips, you and your dog will be happy campers in no time!
