New Year, New Pet: Resolutions For You & Your Pet in 2023

For some of us, making new year’s resolutions is an annual tradition (although we may not always follow through with them!). If you’re a fan of new year’s resolutions, why not consider coming up with a few that you and your pet can work towards achieving together? Here’s a list of resolutions that will have you and your pet starting the new year off on the right paw.

Be more charitable
Start the new year on a positive note by donating your money or time to an animal welfare cause that you care about. Be on the lookout for fundraisers that both you and your pet can participate in like charity walkathons. You can even make a donation to your local animal shelter in your pet’s name. Giving back to the community is a resolution that you and your pet can feel good about accomplishing!

Spend more time together
After a long day at work, it can be tempting to unwind with a Netflix binge or a check-in with our numerous social media feeds. With so many distractions, it’s easy to forget that our pets are trying to compete for our attention. After all, they spend a lot of their time waiting for us to come home! Limit your screen time and devote some time after work hours to spending some quality time with your pets. Whether it’s an evening walk, a game of chase in the backyard, or some extra snuggle time, any time you share with your pet will strengthen the bond that you share.

Maintain a healthy weight
It’s the most common resolution among humans – losing weight. Just like us, it’s important for our pets to maintain a healthy weight. Animal obesity can cause serious health issues down the road if it’s not addressed. Regular exercise can keep both you and your pet in good shape! Walking, for example, has countless benefits. If you and your canine companion need extra motivation, try joining or organizing a walking group. A group of like-minded folks all dedicated to improving their pets’ health will keep everyone accountable and more likely to meet their fitness goals. Plus, it’s a good opportunity to socialize your pup and make new friends!

Learn something new
Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks? Put some time aside to train your pet to perform a new trick or command. Making training time fun and positive will make your pet more receptive to learning. Alternatively, you can treat your pet to a new brainteaser toy. Introducing your pet to a new toy or puzzle game is a great way to stimulate their brains and keep their minds sharp.

Travel more
Pets can get stir crazy too! Travelling, while expensive, is a great way for humans to broaden their horizons and experience new things. Luckily for your wallet, you don’t need to travel too far to change your pet’s surroundings and give them new experiences! Consider changing your usual walking route, going on a hike, trying out an agility course or spoiling your pet with a relaxing day at the spa. Your pet will benefit from the change in scenery and in the quality time you spend together!
